Amazing: ALMOST perfect
This thing really is almost perfect. A whopping 90% efficient; controllable; gets up to temp quickly; I've cooked a full roast dinner on it; lies in vey well overnight; at quarter of a ton, it holds heat really effectively. The only quibble is the size of the firebox... it's the size of a large shoebox. Don't get me wrong, this thing boots out a phenomenal heat: it's nominally rated at 6.6kw, but Charnwood South Africa have mentioned it can go up to 11kw, which I completely believe. So in that regard, I wouldn't want a bigger firebox, but because it's smaller, it can't take the typical 30cm/12" logs and briquettes, so you have to buy 20cm/8" "hobbit" logs. That, and the tiny firebox means there is always ash falling out of the door, though that happens with a lot of stoves. Though expensive, this is an invaluable asset to the house. No one would ever regret it.
Charnwood Haven: Excellent, almost perfect.
I've had such a great experience with this stove since installing 8 months ago and I really wanted to give it a perfect rating. Installation was easy, but at quarter of a ton, it's a 3+ man job, and the Stove Supermarket crew were very helpful as well when it came to buying and advising what I need. As for using the stove: it's easy to light, easy to maintain coals and heat, gets up to cooking temperature pretty fast, with the oven & hotplate easy to keep at the temp you need. It lies in great and can easily be re-lit in the morning from embers after banking it down 10 hours the night before The nominal 6.6kw is misleading as once the body of the stove is up to temp, it's easily kicking out far more than that if you let it. I've heard Charnwood SouthAfrica mention 11kw, which I fully believe and I can't find another stove anywhere that boasts 90% efficiency. This is all interesting when you consider the size of the firebox, which the size of a big shoebox... Heat-wise, I wouldn't want it any bigger, but that is one of the drawbacks: the small firebox means you can't put the more readily available 30cm logs/briquettes in, 20cm/8" absolute max and it does make it slightly messy opening the door with ash/coals falling out. Other than that the air control is quite subtle, rather than the dramatic flameup you can get on other stoves. These are minor quibbles which you could find on any stove, it's a huge asset to the house: it can manage a small roast dinner for 4 and on a cold day, roast the bones of the house that lasts for days and I absolutely love it!
